Sixty years ago today, my mother, my sister and I arrived in Canada aboard the Cunard Steamship Scythia. Imagine, if you will, a 22-year old woman with an eight-week old baby (Pat), and a 22-month old child (me), arriving in Quebec City to meet the husband she hasn't seen in four months. Imagine, also, this young couple (Dad was 27), leaving everybody they knew in England - everybody! - to travel 5,500 kms for the prospect of a better life. Gutsy.
That young couple had four more, Canadian-born, children, and now have 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild, with another on the way.
Thanks, Mum and Dad. You made a good choice!
