Ptui ...

Through the miracle of modern science, my DNA ethnicity profile has been updated.  Whereas before I was 57% Great Britain, 17% Europe West, and 16% Ireland/Scotland/Wales (I yam what I yam), I now appear to have some Norwegian ancestors.  (Yay, me!)

I have also managed to tidy up my family tree so that the dukes and earls and princesses from the past (In the weeds) are gone (though who knows when they might again appear).  No sign of Norwegian ancestors, though.  Hmmmm ...

Mum and Robbie came to visit in February, and I was finally able to get Mum to spit into that little tube.  The idea of spitting goes against every rule of etiquette she learned as a child, so it was quite a production.  But we managed, and off  the sample went for analysis.

And the results are in!

Mum is, indeed, my mother.  (Good to know 😏.)

And .... the Norwegian ancestors are hers!

But there's another interesting wrinkle here: Some of her extended family ended up in Utah with the Mormon pioneers.

Now, Tom also has a link to Mormon  pioneers ...

Which brings us to more spitting.

Because Tom has such a well-documented genealogy, it never occurred to us, at first, to check his DNA ethnicity.  But the excitement was catching, so he spit, too.

And more results are in!

As expected, we see the Thompsons, Russells and Judds from Ireland (Ulster), Scotland, and England, and the Eberts from Germany.  We also see the extended family in New York and the northeastern states (Eberts), and New York and, tada!!, Utah (Judds).

Pretty cool.

Now to see if I can get the rest of the family to spit, too ...

Another milestone birthday

We celebrated Tom's 94th birthday last weekend with a lovely group of friends and family. Three of Tom's "kids" were there, together with some of their significant others; the Rowleys and Meaghers were well represented; and our condo neighbours, Tom's exercise group, and local friends, also joined us.

We had the party at our favourite Cook Street Village establishment - The Collective Wine Bar & Kitchen.  Jon Derry and his staff  looked after everything - from food to drinks - and even picked up a birthday cake!

There was a 90 year age spread reflected in the group, with Tom and Quinn anchoring either end.  Both were waiting eagerly for cake, I might add.  And, of course, there always needs to be a music director ...

Everyone had a great time!

Happy birthday, Tom!
